FAQ
Online dog training course questions, answered
Nine questions that learners ask before they enrol, with plain answers.

Can I really become a dog trainer by taking a course online?
An online course can teach you a great deal of theory. Becoming a trainer also takes practice with real dogs and real owners, so most people combine online learning with shelter work, assisting or a mentor.
Is an online dog training course recognised?
Recognition varies by provider and by region. Dog training is not government-licensed in most of the US, so there is no official list. Ask the provider who stands behind the course, then ask local trainers what they respect.
What does “accredited” mean for a dog training course?
The word can mean very different things. Always ask: accredited by whom, against what standard, and can I check it myself? If you cannot get a clear answer, treat the claim with caution.
Will finishing a course let me earn a credential?
Not automatically. A course certificate comes from the course provider. Independent credentials, such as the CCPDT’s CPDT-KA, come from outside bodies with their own rules, which you should read on their website.
How do I pick between two courses?
Compare what you will do, not what you will watch: assignments, feedback from a person, hands-on requirements and support. Our scorecard on the courses page makes the comparison concrete.
Do I need a mentor if I take a course?
It is strongly worth it. Courses cannot watch you handle a dog and tell you what to change. A working trainer can.
How much time should I set aside each week?
It depends on your schedule and goals. Consistency beats intensity. Our sample week on the cost and time page is only an illustration to adapt.
Does K9PN run an accredited course?
This site makes no such claim. K9PN works with dog trainers on the business side and talks with newcomers about what to learn, where to get experience and how to get set up. Details of how it helps are on the K9PN trainer-career page.
What if I already work with dogs?
Great. You can skip the basics and focus on the gaps: coaching owners, handling harder cases or running your business. Say so when you talk to K9PN so the advice starts where you are.
